Below are listed some different design possibilities, that can be used as inspiration when designing the EI transformer. The design inspiration is divided into the following areas:
Transformer Type and Size
Safety transformer, protective transformer, separating transformer or autotransformer. Horizontal or vertical design.
Housing and Mounting
Open, build into a box or moulded into a housing. Mounting with metal brackets, a baseplate or DIN-Rail brackets.
Connections
Solid wires, stranded flexible wires, soldering pins, screw terminals or clamp terminals.
Safety
Thermal switches and fuses.
Standards and Approvals
In accordance with EN, UL, UL-Medico, VDE, DEMKO.

Transformer Type and Size
The EI transformer can be designed with separated primary and secondary windings for safety transformers, protective transformers and separating transformers.

Another possibility is to design the transformer as an autotransformer where the primary and secondary outlets are directly connected. Using an autotransformer will reduce the size of the transformer when compared to a transformer with separated windings.

Using different core designs can be used to vary the height and base area of the transformer. Below is shown a sketch of a horizontal and vertical EI transformer.

The core size and windings stay the same, only the mounting of brackets and connectors is different. The difference can be illustrated by looking at a standard 300 VA EI transformer. The core used could in this case be a EI 120/53.5. A horizontal design will result in a base of 120 x 103 mm and a height of 120 mm, the vertical design will result in a base of 100 x 90 mm and a height of 150 mm.

Housing and Mounting
The EI transformer can be designed as a open transformer (IP00), with different mounting brackets either welded or screwed to the transformer.

An alternative to the open transformer design is to mount the transformer in an enclosure.

A enclosure is often used to protect the transformer against foreign objects and water. The degree of the protection defines how well the enclosure protect the transformer.
An example could be to use a standard enclosure which provides an IP23 degree of protection. This will protect the transformer against objects larger then 12 mm in diameter and water spray to 60° vertical. Higher protection degrees are obtainable using different enclosures.

Connections
The EI transformer can be supplied with a variety of different wires and connectors.

The connection to the transformer can be made with different types of solid or stranded flexible wires in the length specified by the customer.

The wires from the transformer can be terminated with different connectors mounted on the transformer. Below are listed some of the connector manufacturers commonly used for customized transformers.

Safety
The EI transformer can be designed with different types of thermal switches and electrical fuses integrated in the transformer, thereby insuring a shut down of the transformer and connected circuit in case of overheating or overload.

Inserting a thermal switch directly in the primary winding will allow the transformer to automatically turn of if it becomes overheated.

Standards and Approvals
The EI transformers can be made in accordance with national and international and regional standards such as; EN, UL, CSA, VDE and DEMKO.
